He was the First Indian born mountainer to climb mount Everest on 20th May 1965. This is considered an extraordinary achievement for a person who had very little experience of high alititude alimbing. An abundance of human spirit, sheer detmination and perserverance led to his remarkable success.

He was awarded both the padam Shri and the Arjuna Award in 1965. He is also the reciepient of Sena Medal, Vishist Seva Medal, The Chief of the Army Staff Commendation Card and Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, London.

He took premature retirement in 1981 and devoted his last few years in doing extensive social work in his home town Sri Ganganagar.

Guru Harkrishan Public School was a dream which he turned into a reality.

His outstanding capability and qulities of head and heart were a loss to the nation on account of his sad passing away on 16th Nov. 1989.
